Ancora Selects Weigand for Colfax Corner Development

Weigand Construction will serve as general contractor for Colfax Corner, the first phase of South Bend’s Tech and Talent District and a key component of the city’s Downtown 2045 plan. The project includes restoration of the historic South Bend Tribune building and construction of a new research and office facility at the corner of Colfax Avenue and Main Street.

Maintaining a South Bend office since 2015, Weigand was selected through a competitive process that evaluated project execution, experience and local commitment.

“We intentionally selected a contractor that has a real stake in the outcome of this project,” said Ancora CEO Josh Parker. “Weigand understands the regional market, has longstanding relationships with local subcontractors and trades, and brings the kind of hands-on investment that only a local partner can provide.”

A Historic Redevelopment Specialist

Weigand previously served as construction manager for West Campus at Electric Works in Fort Wayne, a mixed-use redevelopment of the former General Electric campus. The companies’ prior work together was among the factors considered in Weigand’s selection for Colfax Corner.

“Our relationship with Weigand is built on real experience together,” Parker said. “At Electric Works, we saw firsthand how the team performs on a large, complex redevelopment, including how they communicate, problem-solve, and deliver under pressure.”

Weigand has also partnered with the University of Notre Dame on nearly a dozen projects, including the Hammes Bookstore addition, upgrades to Harris Family Track and Field Stadium, and laboratory buildouts within Stinson-Remick Hall of Engineering.

Preserving a Legacy

“The Tribune has been a cornerstone of Colfax Avenue for nearly a century,” said Brian Blight, Weigand senior project manager overseeing the project. “We’re proud to help preserve that legacy while supporting a project designed to encourage innovation, collaboration and continued investment in downtown South Bend.”

Colfax Corner is transforming the historic South Bend Tribune building and adjacent property into 202,000 square feet of innovation and research space. Designed to foster discovery, entrepreneurship and collaboration between South Bend and Notre Dame, the development will house high-impact research, innovation, and community engagement programs alongside companies in advanced industries such as advanced computing, data analytics and AI.

Construction is underway, with demolition and site preparation expected to conclude by summer 2026, core and shell construction beginning in late 2026, the Main Street building topping out in Q2 2027 and initial occupancy anticipated in mid-2028. Learn more about Colfax Corner.

Field of Dreams Made Real

The Tradition Continues

Students, athletes, parents, teachers, and school administrators gathered at Northwood Highschool to cut the ribbon to the new Baseball and Softball Complex! With four beautiful diamonds spanning the edges of the grounds, Northwood’s baseball and softball players continue the school’s legacy in both sports at its own state-of-the-art facility.

A Breath of Fresh Air

The complex is a timely update from Northwood’s older field. Coming in at just over 50 years, the original baseball facility could no longer meet the growing needs of the school’s athletics program. The replacement brings several features that enhance the experience for both players and spectators alike. The new ballpark has four diamonds, two dedicated to baseball and two to softball for junior varsity and varsity level games. Along with seating sections for each diamond, the fields feature dugouts, press boxes, ticket-booths, warm-up areas, and backstops. In the center of the complex is a concession stand and restrooms.

The turf fields allow for easier maintenance, making the upkeep of the entire facility more sustainable. Not only that, but the complex brings softball onto the Northwoods Highschool grounds. Until now, the softball team had to utilize an off-campus field for all their games. This project also includes new access points, which make it easier for students and their families to get in and out of the complex by road or on foot.

How It was Made

Built through the CMc method (Construction Manager as Constructor) by our South Bend team, project management got involved early in the planning process. This created space to identify potential issues before they surfaced. It also allowed our team to offer input with the design and budget to help improve build quality, pricing, and construction timeline.

A Dream Come True

Getting this “Field of Dreams” has been a huge milestone for both the administration and the athletics department at Wa-Nee. Through the generous donation of a previous player, the school system funded this project.

Ironworks Plaza Opens in Downtown Mishawaka

Something’s Stirring Downtown

Residents of downtown Mishawaka are gathering for several new attractions that have arrived with Ironworks Plaza! In this third building phase, with Weigand serving as construction manager, there are three primary new additions.

These include:

An Ice Rink,
The Ironworks Café
An Events Center

However, these are not the only new expansions that have made a home downtown. They will be joining other recent developments like The Ball Band Biergarten (a food event hub) and The Mill (an apartment complex).

More Interest in the Princess City

“This is just an opportunity for us to bring activity to our downtown all the months of the year,” says Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood. “…Another added amenity that will help us to attract people; to fill shops, restaurants, and other things.”

Bringing the Community Together

Residents from all over Mishawaka can now enjoy all the offerings that Ironworks Plaza has! Whether that’s taking a walk through the Biergartens, ordering a warm drink at the café, watching a concert at the event center stage, or skating with friends on the ice rink, there will be plenty to see and do! We’re excited to work alongside the city in this season of growth. We look forward to seeing more municipal projects come together in the future!

Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Indiana

The Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital in Mishawaka has finally opened it’s doors! The two-story, 56,500 square foot facility located just across the street from Saint Joseph Hospital by Edison Lakes, houses 40 beds for patients who are going through rehabilitation from stroke, brain injury, amputation and a range of medical conditions.

This stunning facility has lots of open spaces for rehab equipment with floor to ceiling windows for patients to be able to feel like they are enjoying the outdoors. The skills labs are equipped with kitchen and laundry appliances, as well as other home related spaces to help adapt to typical day-to-day living. The patient bedrooms have their own ensuite bathrooms where they can also relearn how to engage in self care and hygiene practices. Facilities like this are much needed to help people recover from complicated medical issues, where they can stay longer than a typical hospital would keep them.
