An aging Norwell Middle School facility and growing student body called for revitalization and new construction to better serve the needs of the community. Weigand was brought on to perform 40,000sf of demolition and renovations on parts of the existing school, build a 120,000sf, two-story academic wing, and add 3,500sf of football facility improvements and baseball field upgrades.

This dramatically expands the school’s capacity and education offerings with room to support an additional 800 students. New student amentities were mapped into this wing, including an alternative education program area, hallways for 6th-8th grades, and study halls. Special focus was placed on accomdation for students with disabilities, with resource rooms, intense intervention, sensory, aseballnd skills development spaces placed throughout the facility.
Following completion of the new middle school facility, our team conducted a partial demolition of the primary corridor connecting new construction to the rest of the existing building. This zone went under extensive redevelopment, bringing features such as:
These renovations not only simplify high volume foot traffic but also provide extra staff administrative and class space. An upgraded cafeteria also acts as an events hall with a stage and large windows that let natural light in.
On top of new construction and extensive redevelopment, the project also brought new facilities to the on campus sports complex. The football field, known as “The Courtyard,” received an arched steel entrance with ticket booths, a concrete pad, and a 1,900sf multi-use building with restrooms, a concession stand, and storage space. The baseball field received its own building sitting at 1,600sf that includes restrooms, storage, and concessions, along with new concrete sidewalks.
This host of additions allow Norwell Middle School to provide an enriching, dynamic learning environment students both now and well into the future.
